Arcing contacts are subjected to extreme mechnical and thermal stresses during operation. For fractions of a second temperatures rise to several thousand degrees Celsius as a result of the arcing.

Tungsten-copper-materials from PLANSEE are used owing to their unique physical properties. Evaporating copper also cools the skeleton of the tungsten, which in any case features a high melting point of 3410°C.
