X-ray targets can be subjected to higher loadings than stationary anodes. By rotation of dish-shaped X-ray targets under the electron beam, a new, already cooled part of the target surface is continually used as the focal spot. Moreover, the X-ray target cooles down more rapidly by radiating its heat. Far more energy per unit time can therefore be supplied to an X-ray tube with an X-ray target in comparison with a stationary anode.
Mammography X-ray Targets

Gentle X-ray radiation below 30 keV is required for mammography. X-ray targets made of molybdenum meet these requirements, because the peaks of the Ka- and Kb-lines of molybdenum are 17.5 and 19.65 keV and the emission is independent from the tube voltage. |
Advantages:
- PLANSEE supplies the whole range of Mo alloys which are optimally suited for individual customer requirements.
Forms of delivery:
- Mo X-ray targets according to customer specifications
Metal X-ray Targets
Metal X-ray targets are used in different areas of the modern x-ray technology: from the general medical diagnostic and angio- and cardiography to computer tomography.
Advantages:
- As an independent supplier PLANSEE offers the complete range of metal X-ray targets. Experiences through the years and application know-how make us a specialist on that sector.
Forms of delivery:
- RT-TZM targets (they have a TZM body, which imparts a greater resistance to warping under non-uniform heating)
- RT-TZM targets with heat-emitting layers - for higher resistance
- VPS-coated x-ray targets
Graphite backed X-ray targets consist of a thin focal path of a tungsten-rhenium alloy with 5 or 10% rhenium, behind which is the TZM body. In turn it is brazed onto a layer of high purity graphite which varies in thickness.
The TZM body imparts outstanding dimensional stability under severe heating, whilst the graphite layer gives it a much higher heat capacity and a higher heat emission capacity. Because they can be subjected to high thermal stresses, the graphite backed X-ray targets are particularly suitable for X-ray tubes in computerised tomography as well as in the general medical diagnostic or in the angio- and cardiography.
Forms of delivery:
- RT-TZM-C targets
- coated graphite targets as per customer's drawings
- X-ray targets with shaft or rotor according to customer's drawings
PLANSEE also supplies fastening systems and cathode components for various types of X-ray targets.
